Three bodies of Manipur University (MU) have condemned the alleged handcuffing of an arrested university professor while being taken to a hospital.

The joint action committee of the Manipur University Students Union (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs Association (MUSA) in a statement on Sunday said they considered the action as an “insulting treatment to members of the university community.”

Police confirmed that the professor had been handcuffed and added that rules were observed in this case.

“Irrespective of charges, an accused is handcuffed while being taken to a hospital,” a news agency quoted an unnamed police official as saying.

Manipur police on September 21 arrested 89 students of Manipur University and six teachers for acting against the new vice-chancellor and not allowing him to enter the university campus.

The arrests were made following a complaint made by the vice-chancellor of the university, professor K. Yugindro, at Singjamei police station against 31 members of the MUSA and MUTA.
