Security forces arrest militants, seize huge cache of arms, ammo and vehicles in Manipur

Guwahati: Security forces deployed in Manipur have arrested several cadres of extremist organisations and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition, and a number of vehicles during different operations conducted over the past 48 hours.

A cadre of the proscribed outfit Kangleipak Communist Party-Taibangnganba (KCP-Taibangnganba) was arrested on Tuesday (August 27) from Kakching district’s Elangkhanpokpi area, the Manipur Police said on Wednesday (August 28).

The arrested individual has been identified as Koijam Uperjit Singh (29). Singh was allegedly involved in extortion from the public of Kakching, Imphal West and Thoubal districts.

In another operation, security forces arrested two cadres of proscribed outfit Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) from Thoubal district’s Wangjing Heirok crossing area. The duo has been identified as Narengbam Gobin Sing (37) and Moirangmayum Romantic aka Prem (27).

A 9mm pistol with magazine, a submachine gun (SMG) carbine with magazine, five live rounds of ammunition, a four-wheeler vehicle, and a mobile phone handset with SIM card was recovered from their possession.

In follow up to the arrest of four Kangleipak Communist Party-People’s War Group (KCP-PWG) cadres on Monday (August 26), the Manipur Police conducted massive search operations in Bishnupur district’s Langoljam Kangjeibung, Kamong, Leimaram, Irengbam and Heinoubok areas, and busted a shelter house of the organisation in Kamong and Leimaram.

The police recovered six four-wheeler vehicles, military fatigues, which include combat dress, boots, belts, sleeping bags, blankets, bulletproof vests, helmets, and other essential commodities from the house. The police are continuing further search operations to flush out and arrest miscreants from these areas.

On the other hand, the security forces have been conducting search operations and area domination in the fringe and vulnerable areas of both the hill and valley districts of the state. During one such search operation, six live rounds of ammunition and eight fired cases were recovered from Thoubal district’s Sangaiyumpham area.

Meanwhile, the police have put up a total of 105 nakas (checkpoints) across the state and detained as many as 194 persons over the past 24 hours in connection with violation of law.

Moreover, strict security measures are being taken in all the vulnerable locations and a security convoy is being provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of vehicles. 

Movement of 240 vehicles along NH-37 and 85 vehicles along NH-2 carrying essential items were ensured during the period.
