Agitated locals of Indra Colony and Mokrapara, just four km away from Korajhar town in Assam’s BTAD took to the streets protesting against the State Power department on Thursday.

The infuriated locals staged an angry protest against erratic and exorbitant electricity bills received this month issued by Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL).

The residents of these two villages, who are primarily daily wage labourers usually get an electricity bill amounting around Rs 300. Instead, this time, they were shocked to find their electricity bills with amounts as high as Rs 3,000.

Some residents have also alleged that the bills they have received amounted upto as high as Rs 50,000.

However, the department has admitted to anomalies on their part and is doing the needful to rectify the errors.

However, this could not pacify the agitated locals who took to the streets and burnt the effigy of State Power Minister pallab Lochan Das. The agitation was led by the secretary of Kokrajhar unit of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU), Shafikul Sheikh. The protestors also raised slogans against the State Government and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
