Senior functionaries representing the border districts of Assam and Bangladesh met in Silchar on Monday.
The meeting discussed several issues relating to strengthening ties between the two neighbouring nations.
“Border issues were discussed at length with the Bangladeshi delegation,” informed Karimganj DC MS Manivannan speaking to Northeast Now.
“We have put before them our priorities and shared our concerns of the recent developments in border areas,” he added.
“Cattle smuggling was discussed and we have asked them to stop or move the cattle huts close from their borders,” Manivannan added.
Manivannan further said that to curb cattle smuggling, Indian authorities have clamped Section 144 CrPC in Cachar and Karimganj districts.
“We asked them to do something similar in their border districts,” added the Karimganj DC.
Rampant infiltrations to India from Bangladesh was also discussed, the DC said.
“Strict action would be taken against any perpetrators trying to sneak into India without any proper papers,” said Manivannan.
The Bangladeshi authorities were also asked to take back the illegal Bangladeshi nationals lodged in Indian jails.
“We asked them to take their nationals lodged in Indian jails post completion of their punishment,” said Manivannan.
Other issues discussed were border trade enhancement, re-linking rail service between Mahisasan in Karimganj with Sylhet and initiate a Silchar-Sylhet bus service.
