Former CM Tarun Gogoi

The huge furore created following RSS leader Dr Krishna Gopal’s controversial statement on Mahapurush Shrimanta Shankardeva and Bhupen Hazarika at an event in Gauhati University is showing no signs of dying. Now, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who is very active on social media further fuelled the uproar on Monday with a series of tweets.

“I strongly condemned the absurd remarks made on Srimanta Sankardev & Bhupen Hazarika by RSS leader Krishna Gopal in Gauhati University have immensely wounded the sentiments of the people of Assam,” Tarun Gogoi tweeted.

“It is unethical to invite such leaders in educational institutions who attempts to saffronise educational institutions and particularly GU Professor Nanigopal Mahanta should refrain from taking active part in RSS at a time when he is a professor of the University as it will signal a bleak future of the students community,” Gogoi said in another tweet.

He further tweeted, “Moreover RSS did not have any contribution in the freedom movement as claimed by Krishna Gopal, instead it was #Savarkar who submitted mercy petitions to British authorities in Andaman and indirectly helped the British..Before making such unethical remarks, RSS should study Sankardev’s philosophy of social justice & universal brotherhood where there is no discrimination on religious lines which is contrary to that of RSS. They must know that Sankardev’s followers were from all religions.”

In yet another tweet Gogoi said, “RSS must know that Srimanta Sankardev had asked his Muslim disciple to erect the first pillar of his first Satra at Bordowa. Sankardev united all small communities irrespective of caste & religion, the same is being attempted to divide by the RSS to create social disharmony..”
