Five political groups of European Parliament have jointly drafted a resolution which claims that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is a violation of the secularism of the Indian Constitution and is dangerously divisive.

Moreover, the resolution also claims that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) promotes xenophobia and can cause a large number of people to become stateless which will in turn increase their sufferings.

Another political group of the European Parliament has independently drafted a resolution which backs India on CAA but condemns the use of excessive violence.

As per reports, these two resolutions will be debated in the European Parliament and will be put to vote on Thursday.

The joint resolution, which had been signed by 559 members, also condemns the internet shutdowns in many parts of the northeast due to the CAA protests.

The resolution stated that the internet shutdowns are “is a violation of the fundamental right to access information.”

It also condemned the jailing of activists like Akhil Gogoi, Dharjya Konwar and Bitu Sonowal.

“Under the current government there has been an increased crackdown on the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, including jailing of peaceful critics on charges of sedition, criminal defamation or terrorism,” the resolution stated.
