Loknath Hekim, a homeopathic doctor allegedly conducting surgeries in Marwari Maternity Hospital in Guwahati was arrested by CID sleuths on Thursday. Hekim reportedly had been working in the hospital for the past three years.
Jitul Deka, Secretary General of Asomiya Yuva Mancha, who complained with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police about the activities of the doctor told Northeast Now, “We had heard that Loknath Hekim, who is a homeopathic doctor, conducts surgeries in Marwari Maternity Hospital but we didn’t have proof against him.”
Deka added, “He (Hekim) has a homeopathy clinic in Jalukbari where we enquired and came to know that he conducts surgeries. Then we went and posed as patient and sought an appointment with him at Marwari Maternity Hospital. After that we were sure that he actually conducts surgery and we complained with the CID in this regard and they arrested him today.”
Deka also said, “Hospital records have showed that Hakim has conducted twenty three operations in the month of February itself. When CID went for their raid, he was in the Operation Theatre itself. Interestingly, Anil Kalita, who is the Superintendent of the Marwari Maternity Hospital said that Hakim didn’t actually conduct surgery but sometimes helped the surgeons in the OT. The question is why a person would be allowed to even help inside the OT when he is specialised in something else?”
“We demand a thorough probe into the matter and if the Superintendent is found to be guilty, he should be arrested and if need be, the hospital should be sealed as well,” added Deka.
Debojit Hazarika, DIG, CID informed Northeast Now, “We conducted a search operation at Marwari Maternity Hospital after receiving a public complaint. During the search, it was revealed that homeopathy doctor was performing as assistant in major surgeries in the maternity section of the hospital.”
“We have apprehended the doctor named Loknath Hekim and also seized several incriminating documents from the hospital. A case vide CID PS C/No 10/18 has been registered. We will be conducting phase-wise investigation to find out the role of the hospital authorities in this incident,” said Hazarika.
