Dibrugarh is ready to host three community screening camps on oral, breast and cervical cancer for the eligible population in Dibrugarh from September 5 to September 7, 2018.
The camps will be jointly organised by the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF), Pratishruti Dibrugarh with the support from Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), the Dibrugarh committee of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and District Health Service.
The screening camp on September 5 will be held at Swahid Bhavan, the office of the AASU, Dibrugarh.
The registration will start at 9 am and will continue till 1 pm for oral cancer screening.
The screening will target male population above 30 years of age.
On September 6, the screening camp will be held at Moran Tiloi CHC.
The registration will start at 9 am and continue till 1 pm for screening of oral, breast and cervical cancers for both male and female above 30 years of age.
On September 7 the screening camp will be conducted at the State Dispensary, Graham Bazar.
The registration will start from 9 am and will continue till 1 pm for breast and cervical cancer screening only for female.
Assam Cancer Care Foundation is a Tata Trusts and Government of Assam initiative to provide comprehensive cancer control services across the State.
On Sunday, about 30,000 new cancer cases are detected every year in Assam.
The number of adults consuming tobacco is one of the highest with 48.2% against 28.6% in the country.
Fifty per cent of all cancers and 90% of all oral cancers are directly related to tobacco consumption.
However, 70% of the cancer cases are presented at an advanced stage and only 30% at an early state, thus, resulting in a high mortality rate due to cancer in the State.
“To address this issue, ACCF is looking at conducting regular community screening camps across Assam with an objective of early detection of cancer, by partnering with like-minded organisations. We are keen on starting with Dibrugarh and for this purpose, we are partnering with the Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative care Trust based in Dibrugarh,” Dr Gayatri Gogoi, nodal officer, Cancer programme, AMCH.
She added, “The screening will be conducted by trained doctors and nurses for population between the age of 30-65 years for oral, breast and cervical cancers. Oral Visual Examination (OVE), Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) and Visual Inspection using Acetic Acid (VIA) will be performed for oral, breast and cervical cancer screening, respectively. ASHA workers will be given an incentive of Rs 10 for every individual mobilised to get the screening.”
