Dr Hiren Gohain
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal with Dr Hiren Gohain at latter’s residence at Nizarapar in Guwahati on Thursday.

In a significant development, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with state BJP president Ranjit Dass on Thursday evening called on renowned scholar and staunch critic of the ruling dispensation Dr Hiren Gohain here as part of his party’s “Janasampark Abhiyan” (Contact for Support) campaign and briefed him on the achievements of the BJP government.

During the meeting at Dr Gohain’s residence at Nizarapar area of the city, Sonowal presented him a booklet having the achievements of the BJP-led central government in the last four years.

The development assumed significance, as Chief Minister Sonowal as part of the campaign has chosen to meet such a person, who is very vocal against the BJP governments both at the Centre as well as in the state.

Dr Gohain, who along with a section of writers and conscious citizens, had appealed to the people of the state before 2016 not to vote for BJP, is currently targeting the saffron party opposing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

While Chief Minister Sonowal maintained silence over Dr Gohain’s criticism, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is time and again making derogatory comments against Dr Gohain.

A section of social media users, however, commented that there is nothing to be surprised as everything is possible in politics.
