Guwahati: A fresh development has taken place in the Zubeen Garg-related case as accused Siddhartha Sharma approached the court with a bail application on May 26, even as trial proceedings continue in the matter.
The case, being heard before a Special Fast Track Court in Assam, has already moved to the stage of formal framing of charges. The court, presided over by Judge Sharmila Bhuyan, has framed charges against multiple accused persons under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to murder, culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, extortion and cheating.
The proceedings are registered as State vs Siddhartha Sharma and others, involving seven accused individuals in total. Alongside Sharma, the other accused include Shyamkanu Mahanta, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Amritprabha Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, Nandeswar Borah and Paresh Baishya.
Court documents indicate that the charges cover a wide range of alleged offences, including criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, cheating, criminal breach of trust, extortion and destruction of evidence. The specific sections applied under the BNS include 3(6), 3(7), 3(8), 61(2), 103(1), 105, 238, 308(2), 318(4) and 316(5), depending on the alleged role attributed to each accused.
With charges now formally framed, the case is set to advance toward the trial stage before the Special Fast Track Court. The bail plea filed by Sharma will be considered as part of the ongoing judicial process.
