The department of energy, Tezpur University, recently inked an MoA with the State Innovation and Transformation Aayog (SITA), Assam to develop a smart platform for promotion of renewable energy (RE) in Assam.

The department, with the financial support and guidance of SITA, proposes to develop a robust and smart platform to provide updated information for availability of renewable energy resources.

As per the proposal, the platform will also identify suitable renewable energy technology for uniform and accelerated growth of renewable energy in entire Assam with ensured benefits for the local communities and taking care of potential hazards.

“Renewable energy generation capacity in India has risen to about 135GW (36% of the total power generation) against the country’s RE target of 175 GW by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030,” said Prof Debendra Chandra Baruah, head, department of energy, who will lead the SITA funded project.

“However, the growth of renewable energy in Assam remains sluggish (less than 3% share to the India’s installed capacity) despite the promotional efforts and favourable resources (biomass, solar and pico/micro hydro) available in this region,” Prof Baruah said.

“This project will benefit the department, which has been working for generation of key expertise, processes, and technologies for potential utilization of locally available renewable energy resources in Assam,” he added.

Apart from Prof. Baruah, Dr Nabin Sarmah, assistant professor, department of energy, will also work in the project, Tezpur University’s medical cell chairman Dr. Rajeev K. Doley said in a statement.
