Suspected ULFA (I) militants on Friday evening abducted a staffer of Shankar Tea Estate at Talap in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The abducted staffer was identified as Gauranga Deb, who works as head fitter in the tea estate.

Police sources said that Deb was abducted by a group of four armed miscreants from the tea estate factory.

It is suspected that the group belongs to banned rebel outfit ULFA (I) .

Sources said that he was abducted for ransom.

ULFA (I) reportedly demanded money from the tea estate and the management did not pay the ransom to the militant group.

According to information, a joint operation was launched by army and police to rescue the kidnapped staffer.

Tinsukia SP Siladitya Chetia said that Deb is working as a head fitter in the tea estate for last many years.

Chetia said he was abducted by suspected ULFA (I) militant from the factory this evening.

“The garden management has denied receiving any extortion letter from ULFA (I). We are investigating the case and have launched a joint operation against the militants,” Chetia told Northeast Now.

The ULFA (I) has been facing severe financial crisis after Myanmar Army launched operations against the Northeast rebels in its territory.
