Digboi: IAS officer Sumit Sattawan of the 2015 batch took over as Commissioner of Tinsukia district on Wednesday following a recent transfer order issued by the Assam government.
He succeeds Swapnil Pal as part of the latest administrative reshuffle undertaken by the state administration.
Sattawan brings significant experience in district administration, having previously served as Commissioner of Lakhimpur and Kamrup (Metropolitan) districts.
His appointment to Tinsukia comes at a critical juncture, with the Assam Assembly elections scheduled just a few months away, placing added emphasis on governance, law and order, and election preparedness.
The new Commissioner is not unfamiliar with the district. He earlier served as Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) of Margherita from February to December 2018.
During that period, he dealt with several complex administrative issues, including industrial regulation and border-related challenges along the AssamโArunachal Pradesh boundary.
He was also associated with the execution of public utility projects and initiatives aimed at regulating coke industries in the region.
Officials believe his prior exposure to the area will help him address long-pending issues that remained unresolved earlier due to time constraints.
Key areas expected to receive attention include illegal mining, coal syndicates, traffic congestion, unauthorised coke industries, encroachment, rehabilitation concerns, and other civic and regulatory challenges.
Soon after assuming charge on Wednesday afternoon, Sattawan took part in an election-related video conference, indicating the administrationโs immediate focus on ensuring smooth election preparations.
Conducting free, fair, and peaceful Assembly elections will be among his primary responsibilities.
With his familiarity with the district and a track record of administrative leadership, there is cautious optimism among officials and residents that his tenure will bring renewed momentum to governance and administrative action in Tinsukia.
