Guwahati: The Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union observed its 25th Martyrs’ Day on Wednesday at Sidalsati in Assam’s Bongaigaon district.
During the event, leaders reiterated their long-standing demand for Scheduled Tribe recognition for the Koch-Rajbongshi community and called for discussions on a separate Kamtapur.
Speaking at the gathering, All Assam Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) General Secretary Balaram Barman cautioned the state government that failing to address the tribal status issue before the 2026 Assam Assembly elections could have serious repercussions.
He also urged the Government of India to begin formal talks regarding a separate Kamtapur region.
Barman criticised the rejection of the Ministerial Group’s report on tribal status by the CCTOA and questioned the involvement of Minister Aditya Khakhlari in the matter.
He warned that delays in granting constitutional recognition to the Koch-Rajbongshi community could trigger unrest.
Addressing the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Barman said denying the community its constitutional rights ahead of the upcoming elections could create a tense situation in the state.
The event saw participation from leaders, activists, and community members, all reaffirming their determination to continue the movement until their demands are met.
AKRSU leaders, supporters, and activists from across Assam gathered for the Martyrs’ Day programme, reaffirming their commitment to seek Scheduled Tribe recognition and dialogue on forming Kamtapur.
