Guwahati Smart City Limited plans to install smart bio-toilets in major locations of the city to address the problem of shortage of public toilets.

The project uses technology approved by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

GSCL, Managing Director Angamathu said that the process will be completed in three phases. The first phase will include setting up the Bio-toilets in 30 areas of the city focusing on railway stations, GMCH and bus stations and will be completed by June 30 this year. The second phase will include 20 more toilets and then expansion will begin for the third phase.

The aim is prevent open defecation, pollution of water bodies and promoting safety and dignity for users.

The installation of smart bio toilets will allow smart and electronically-operated, biodegradable, environment-friendly toilets.

The load capacity of each toilet will be minimum 200 defecations per day and the toilets will be of minimum Grade 304 stainless steel with unit dimension of up to 170 square feet. The operational time proposed for the toilets is from 6 am to 10 pm.
