The decision to send two senior Central Government officials was conveyed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to a delegation of Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP) in the national capital on Tuesday. The ACLP delegation was led by Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia.

Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also accompanied the delegation.

“We got positive feedback from the Home Minister. He assured us that all stakeholders will be consulted on the NRC update process,” said Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora.

The Congress delegation also pointed out the attempt to link the NRC process with proceedings in the Foreigners’ Tribunal. A list has been sent to various NRC Seva Kendra officials specifying names for non-inclusion in the final draft of the NRC, non-publication of successive voters’ lists of the pre-1971 period barring those pertaining to 1965, 1966, 1970 and 1971, the delegation said.

“We have demanded that notices to exclude D-voters from the NRC lists should be avoided,” said Saikia.

The Congress delegation also met RGI Sailesh over the issue.

The delegation on Monday called on President Ram Nath Kovind and raised their concern.

Meanwhile, an Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) delegation also met Home Minister Rajnath Singh to express their concern over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

“We were told by the Home Minister that all stakeholders would be taken into consideration before taking any decision on the controversial Bill,” AGP president Atul Bora.

The Home Minister is learnt to have told the AGP delegation that without the approval of the concerned stakeholders, New Delhi would not take any decision.
