Fear of being stateless after being dropped from the final draft NRC and pending ‘D’ voter case against mother forced a youth to commit suicide at Dimilapar village of Tamulpur under Baksa district on Sunday.

The youth, in his thirties, has been identified as Binay Chanda. He used to work with a rice mill there as a daily labourer along with his mother Shanti Chanda. About one and half year back he got married and 20 days back he became a father.

On Saturday evening Binay had even visited his in-laws house at Kumarikata to see his new born baby. He kissed the baby after taking on his lap  before leaving the in-laws house. He was later dropped to his residence by his brother-in-law.

On Sunday morning villagers found Binay hanging from a tree outside his residence. He was depressed as names of his family members were dropped from the NRC due to pending ‘D’ voter case against his mother. Police later sent his body for postmortem examination.

Talking to Northeast Now over phone former leader of All BTC Bengali Youth & Students Federation Nikhil Dey said, “Binay had submitted refugee registration card before the tribunal. One year back his elder brother who stays separately also received ‘D’ voter notice but came out clear after submission of refugee card of 1964.”

But it was a different ordeal for him in his mother Shanti Chanda’s case. Though the same documents were submitted Binay had to make several rounds to the Foreigners Tribunal at Tamulpur. He had sold all the gold ornaments he had to fight the case.

Binay was apparently disturbed. His advocate had reportedly told him that his mother has very slim chance of coming out clear in the FT case. He was fed up, worried and depressed as he exhausted all the money and took the extreme step, villagers said.
