Union Minister of State (independent charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday honoured shuttler PV Sindhu for her significant performance at the BWF World Championships.

Rijiju presented Sindhu with a cheque of Rs 10 lakh for creating history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the BWF World Championships.

Sindhu defeated Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in the women’s singles final in just 38 minutes on Sunday.

Apart from Rijiju, Badminton Association of India president and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, coaches Pullela Gopichand and Kim Ji-Hyun and Sindhu’s father PV Ramana were also present during the occasion.

Informing on the occasion of honouring PV Sindhu, Rijiju stated on his Twitter handle: “Honoured @Pvsindhu1who created history and made India proud by winning the World Badminton Championship for the first time! My best wishes to her in her pursuit to bring more glory to India.”

“Also extended honour to @Pvsindhu1’s father PV Ramana, coach P. Gopichand & Kim from the Govt and BAI President @himantabiswaji,” he further tweeted.

Rijiju also honoured shuttler Sai Praneeth with a cheque of Rs 4 lakh for winning a bronze medal at the BWF World Championships.

Praneeth became the second person to win a bronze medal at the BWF World Championships after former shuttler Prakash Padukone.
