Assam education minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, who visited the residence of the victim of Jorhat mob lynching at Dergaon on Tuesday assured that the state government would take steps for the trial of the case in the fast-track court.

A mob lynched All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leader Animesh Bhuyan at Jorhat on Monday.

Informing about the Assam government‘s decision on fast-tracking of the trial, education minister Dr Pegu tweeted: “The trial will be done in a fast-track court.”

Dr Pegu, who reached Jorhat on Monday evening at the direction of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday visited the victim’s residence at Khakandaguri village under Dergaon police station in Golaghat district along with Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi.

The minister offered condolence to the family members of the victim.

While sharing pictures of his visit to Animesh Bhuyan’s on his Twitter handle, Dr Pegu wrote: “At Khakandaguri village under Dergaon PS, visited and offered my condolences to the bereaved family members of Animesh Bhuyan who was brutally killed in Jorhat yesterday.”

Minister Pegu said chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already ordered the police to file the charge-sheet within 15 days.

“Hon’ble CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has already ordered police to file the chargesheet within 15 days,” Dr Pegu said.

The Jorhat Police has arrested a total of 13 culprits on charges of killing Animesh Bhuyan.

Sensation prevails after video clips of a mob attacking AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan and journalist Mridusmanta Baruah surfaced on social media.

Jorhat Police has so far arrested a total of 13 culprits.

The arrested culprits include Bitopan Das, Abinash Bora, Chiranjib Das, Bikram Das, Subas Bora, Deba Das, Saru Lora Das and Mohan Das.

The main culprit, identified as Kola Lora, who was absconding since Monday, has been arrested by police on Tuesday.

Special Director General of Police (Law & Order), Assam GP Singh on his Twitter handle on Monday evening said the investigation shall be monitored at the highest level including the CID, Assam Police, Assam government and the CMO.

AASU president Dipaka Nath and chief adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya also visited the victim’s residence and met his family members.

While condemning the incident, Nath assured the victim’s family that the AASU would fight for punishment to the killers of Animesh Bhuyan.

The AASU leaders demanded capital punishment for the killers.

Bhattacharya said the trial of the in fast-track court, as assured by the government should be time-bound.

“Each of the killers must be arrested and punished,” Bhattacharya said.
