Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured strict action against the culprits involved in the lynching of a young leader of the All Assam Students’ Union. 

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Those involved in the incident will be booked and justice will be served.” 

23-year-old AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan was lynched on Monday by unruly mob in upper Assam’s Jorhat town.

The incident reportedly took place after a man was injured in a road accident. 

A video of a mob attacking AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan and journalist Mridusmanta Baruah has surfaced on social media.

The deceased AASU leader is a resident of Dergaon in Golaghat district while journalist Baruah works for a private TV news channel.   

Meanwhile, Jorhat police has arrested three people in connection with the incident thus far. 

“We are examining the video footage of the incident to identify the culprits involved in the incident. We have arrested three people so far and further investigating is underway. We will arrest everyone involved in the incident, none will be allowed to go scoot free,” said a police official. 

The AASU has demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the incident. 

AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah said, “We are giving 24 hours’ time to the police to nab those involved in the killing. If police fails, then AASU will take action.”
