A 23-year-old All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leader was killed and a local journalist and a youth were injured on Monday when an unruly mob attacked them in upper Assam’s Jorhat town.

The incident reportedly took place after a man was injured in a road accident.

A video of a mob attacking AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan and journalist Mridusmanta Baruah has surfaced on social media.

Slain AASU leader is a resident of Dergaon in Golaghat district while journalist Baruah works with a private TV channel.  Jorhat police has arrested five people in connection with the incident.

The arrested persons have been identified as Deb Das, Abinash Bora, Subhash Bora, Bikram Das and Bitopan Das.

“We are examining the video footage of the incident to identify the culprits involved in the incident. We have arrested three people so far and further investigating is underway. We will arrest everyone involved in the incident, none will be allowed to go scoot free,” said a police official.

The AASU has demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the incident.
