This decision was taken by the Assam Government.

Smart fencing will be used to seal the unfenced part of the international border between India and Bangladesh in Karimganj town of Assam.

A stretch of 4.5 kilometres of India-Bangladesh border in Karimganj town will be sealed by the means of smart fencing.

Notably, the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) had objected to physical fencing of the Indo-Bangla border in Karimganj town.

As per international border rules, fencing on either side of the border should be erected 150 yards away from the main point.

However, a part Karimganj town will end up on the other side of the fencing if physical fencing is being erected according to international border rules.

The Assam Government had sought relaxations in international border rules to save the part of Karimganj town.

However, the BGB showed no interest on relaxations of international border rules.

Therefore, the Assam Home Department has come up with the alternate option of sealing that part of the border via smart fencing.
