A large number of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troops deployed in Assam have moved to Kashmir valley in the last two days as part of a massive security drive.

Official sources said at least 70 companies of CRPF have left for Jammu & Kashmir from Assam.

“Each company consists of about 100 troops. So a total of about 700 CRPF troops engaged in Assam will now be deployed in J&K,” an official told Northeast Now.

He said at least nine companies of the paramilitary force from Assam have already taken position in Kashmir valley.

Less than a week after moving 10,000 troops of paramilitary forces to Kashmir, the centre on Thursday rushed about 25,000 paramilitary personnel to the Valley.

Fear and confusion gripped the valley after the J&K government issued an unprecedented order, cancelling a pilgrimage and asking tourists to leave the state.

These developments have taken place amid rumours in the Valley that the Union government may be planning to abrogate Article 35A that grants special rights to permanent residents of Kashmir.
