Assam has witnessed significant drop in crime rates during Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s regime compared to previous Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government.

Assam Government and National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), data shows marginal improvement in statistics. It has been little less than two years since Sarbananda Sonowal came to power and there is lot of speculation about the law and order scenario of the state.

As per data recently provided by the Assam Government on floor of Assembly recently, in the days of Sonowal government, Assam (excluding Guwahati) has seen 22, 952 cases of theft, 264 cases of dacoity, 1961 cases of murder, 10, 852 cases of kidnapping, 1785 cases of loot, 3628 cases of suicide and 11 cases of witch hunting till February 3, 2018.

Meanwhile, in Guwahati, 5923 cases of theft, 12 cases of dacoity, 130 cases of murder, 1147 cases of kidnapping, 539 cases of loot, 30 cases of suicide and 1 case of witch hunting have been recorded during this period.

As per the data provided by NCRB, in the year 2014 and 2015, the last two years under Gogoi’s regime, barring kidnapping, most of other crime rates were higher than Sonowal’s regime.

There were 2,794 murders, 458 dacoity, 1966 cases of loot and 25,136 cases of theft in the last two years under Gogoi’s regime which are higher than the figures for the same crime during Sonowal’s tenure. However, the number of kidnapping in the last two years under Gogoi is 10, 654 which is less than the staggering number of 10,852 kidnapping during Sonowal’s regime.

Earlier, the crime rate was quite high during Tarun Gogoi’s tenure. As per information provided by then forest minister Rakibul Hussain in the assembly in 2014, there were 35,565 cases of theft from 2011 to 2014, 15,689 kidnappings during the same period and also 15, 493 cases of murder.
