Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Harish Rawat assured the people of the State that they are standing with the people who are protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019.

During a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday, Rawat said that protests against CAA will continue across the country till the Act is scrapped.

“Assam Pradesh Congress Committee stands with the afflicted protestors of CAA. The Congress has opposed the passage of Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha,” he added.

“Congress will never accept CAA,” he reiterated.

Meanwhile, former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi claimed that no one understood CAA except state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

“Students, youths and aged people are coming out in streets of the state in protest against CAA,” Gogoi said.

“The BJP is only increasing the ire of the protestors by adding fuel to it. They will be able to bring back peace in the state only by scrapping CAA,” he said

“The BJP is only trying to create division among Hindus and Muslims with the passage of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB),” he said

“While I served as Assam chief minister for 15 years, no such protests took place as is happening now,” he said.

Gogoi also raised anti-BJP slogans like BJP hatao, Desh Bachao, Sarbananda Himanta Hatao, Assam Bachao (Throw BJP, save India, throw Sarbananda and Himanta, save Assam).

“We want a peaceful country that is govern by the ideals of Amedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Ballabhbai Patel,” Gogoi added.
