Days after the government appointed Hitesh Dev Sharmna as the new NRC state coordinator, Congress leaders on Tuesday met Registrar General of India (RGI) Vivek Joshi seeking his removal.
A Congress delegation led by former minister Rokybul Hussain called on Joshi in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum supporting their demand.
“We have appealed RGI to remove the new NRC coordinator. He was known for his controversial statements involving religious minorities,” said Hussian after the meeting.
In their memorandum, the Congress leaders alleged that Sharma has made persistent and very strong anti NRC comments on Facebook over last 2-3 years which clearly indicate that he does not believe in the Supreme Court mandated project.
“…So we don’t think that he will have any intention to carry forward the project in a fair and balanced manner,” said Hussian.
The Congress party strongly condemn appointment of a politically motivated officer in the sensitive project like NRC, the Congress delegation said in the memorandum.
Dev Sarma a 1986-batch Assam civil servant, is serving as the secretary to the urban development and finance departments of the Assam government.
