The Cachar rape and murder case of a 17-year-old girl in Dwarbond area under Dholai constituency of the district turned murkier following the suicide of the prime accused Rajen Das.

Das was found hanging by a tree in a nearby tea garden on Thursday morning.

In charge of Dwarbond Police Investigation Centre Ram Dular Goala, in conversation with Northeast Now said, “Rajen Das was the prime accused in the rape and murder of a 17-year-old student from the Hmar community.”

“After committing the crime, out of fear and guilt he hanged himself by a tree in a nearby tea garden,” Goala infomred.

On Wednesday evening, a 17-year-old student from the Hmar community was allegedly raped and murdered in Dwarbond area under Dholai constituency.

As pressure mounted on the district administration, a massive manhunt was launched to nab the culprits and sniffer dogs were pressed into service.

Silchar Sadar Thana officer-in-charge Ditumoni Goswami along with investigating officer Ram Dular Goala and a team of police personnel reached Bagbahar gaon panchayat to track down the culprits.

The preliminary investigations led the police team to the house of prime accused Rajen Das.

Police took Rajen’s elder brother Biswajit Das, one autorickshaw driver Shishir Das alias Mayna Das and one Samiran Das into custody for further interrogation.

“We are grinding the three other accused whom we picked up in connection to the rape and murder of the teenage student,” informed Goala.
