The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, deployed along the India-Bangladesh international border at Phulkandi area in Assam’s Karimganj district, killed a Bangladeshi national and injured two others on Saturday.

The BSF personnel on duty shot dead the Bangladeshi national, who along with few others had crossed the zero line of the international border for cattle smuggling, say media reports.

The area on Bangladesh side where the incident took place is known as Dimai in Barlekha Upazila of Moulvibazar.

The deceased Bangladeshi national has been identified as 37-year-old Abdur Rouf, son of Sajjad Ali, a resident of Kechrigul village in Barlekha Upazila.

This was informed by Lt Colonel Faizur Rahman, the Commanding Officer of the 52 Battalion of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).

Media reports quoted BGB official Rahman as saying that Abdur Rouf had to lose his life as he along with few other people had violated law by crossing the zero line for smuggling cattle.

It has also been reported that Abdur Rouf, who is a cattle smuggler, along with few others attempted to cut the border fencing which was prevented by the BSF jawans of 134 Battalion, guarding the international border.

But the patrolling BSF jawans were attacked with daos by Rouf and his accomplices, however, he safely escaped.

There were 15 to 20 Bangladeshi nationals, say reports.

But to stop the group from entering inside the border, the BSF personnel had no option but to open fire at which one Abdur Rouf was killed and two others received injuries.

As per reports, the patrolling BSF personnel of Bobarghal camp had opened fire at the cattle smugglers in Uttar Dimai border area (Phulkandi in Karimganj side).

The incident took place at 12 am.

While Abdur Rouf died on the spot, the others managed to flee.

The Barlekha Sadar Union chairman Siraj Uddin was quoted as saying that the body of the deceased has been taken to Patharkandi Police Station under Assam’s Karimganj district.

The BSF personnel recovered one wire cutter and three long daos from the spot.
