All the madrassas in Assam, which are being run under the state government, will be converted into regular educational institutes with effect from April 1, 2021, said education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
This was announced by Assam education minister Sarma after the Assam Repealing Bill, 2020 was passed by the State Assembly on Wednesday.
The Bill, introduced by the Assam government on Monday, sought to repeal the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialization) Act, 1995 and the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialization of Services of Employees and Re-Organisation of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Act, 2018.
The Assam Repealing Bill was passed despite opposition from Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) who staged walkout in the Assembly.
“Glad that the Bill pertaining to repeal of Provincialisation of Madrassas has been passed, even as @INCAssam and @AIUDFOfficial expectedly staged a walkout in Assembly. Assam currently has 189 high madrassas and madrassa higher secondary schools run under the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC).
The state also has 542 pre-senior, senior and title madrassa and Arabic colleges run by the State Madrassa Education Board.
Sarma earlier said the law will in no way attempt to stop spiritual education of any religion, and that no one can go outside the purview of the Constitution and stop minority educational institutions.
