The Bharat Bandh called by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) remained peaceful and total in Goalpara district. The long distance buses, commercial establishments and most of the educational institutions remained closed.

However, few private vehicles and e-rickshaws were seen here and there. Two Congress legislators Abdur Rasid Mondal and AK Rasid Alom led the protest at the busy Transport Station area of the town who offered flowers to one or two bikers who were running their vehicles.

“We have arranged a very peaceful agitation and our workers are directed strictly to maintain Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence. Thereby we have offered flowers symbolising cooperation and friendship to those one or two bike riders who have come out with different reasons,” said Abdur Rasid Mondal.

Meanwhile, police detained six persons, belonging to the Congress and SUCI (Socialist Unity Centre of India) in the morning who went to protest inside the ASTC bus stand.

Among those who were arrested include Khalilur Rahman, secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.

“Maintenance of law and order is our prime concern, so we have tried to facilitate communication to those who have come out and we have detained six persons for illegally entering and stopping ASTC buses,” informed Amitava Sinha, Superintendent of Police, Goalpara.
