West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s tirade against NRC in Assam has also drawn flak from the Bengali people living in Barak Valley. A sizeable number of Bengali people of the three districts of Barak valley expressed their resentment against Mamata as her government was loath to verify the documents sent by the NRC officials.
Founder President of All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students Association (ACKHSA), Pradip Dutta Roy, convened a press meet on Wednesday afternoon and came down heavily upon Mamata Banerjee for poking her nose into this very sensitive matter.
Briefing the media, Pradip Dutta Roy, said, “When National Register of Citizens (NRC) officials from Assam sent 1,11,048 names of applicants to her state for verification, the matter was not ‘suitably supported’ by her, or her government. Only 5,852 names got back verified from her state, which goes to show that she alone has gobbled up more than a lakh applicant”.
Speaking to Northeast Now, he further added, “The hue and cry that she is making is just to appease her minority vote bank of her state. The team of Trinamool Congress leaders that she is sending, would add more fuel to the fire that has not started at all in Assam, post declaration of NRC final draft”.
He added, “They will come here and start a communal flare up for which I appeal to the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal to take strong actions for any such errands”.
Dutta Roy warned governments of both Manipur and Meghalaya for the incidents of harassments in the name of NRC documents verification in border areas of Jiribam in Manipur and Ratacherra in Meghalaya to people of Barak valley traveling through these routes.
He said, “I would like to make these governments aware that Barak valley too has people from both these states residing out here, and any untoward incident with our breathrens, we won’t keep silent”.
In the end, Pradip Dutta Roy, praised the efforts of the Supreme Court, Prateek Hajela and the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, for bringing out this final draft of NRC.
The waiting media too asked him with a pinch as to whether he has given up his statehood demand, to which he said, “I shall wait till the final list of NRC comes out”.
