A delegation of Barak Valley Coordination Committee led by former union minister Kabindra Purkayastha met Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday and submitted a memorandum regarding granting of citizenship to religious minorities from Bangladesh who were forced to enter India due to atrocities committed on them in that country.

BJP state president Ranjit Das was also present in the meeting. Talking to NE NOW Purkayastha said, “We want update of NRC. But during the update process no Indian citizen should face problems.”

He also said Hindu Bengalis, Shikh, Jain, Christians, Parsi communities of Bangladesh who were forced to flee from Bangladesh and take shelter in India till December 31, 2014 should be granted Indian citizenship. To buttress his claim he referred to the Citizenship Act. He also demanded that names of these people should be included in the NRC. The coordination committee would meet the Central leaders in New Delhi on December 22 regarding granting citizenship to the these religious minorities from Bangladesh.
