Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has condemned the actions of a police officer who assaulted a food delivery boy in Guwahati. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, sparked public outrage.

The Chief Minister stressed that the police force must prioritize public service and respect. He emphasized that the era of unchecked police power is over and such behavior will not be tolerated.

“Those days of unchecked power are long gone. The society will no longer tolerate the misuse of authority or violence against the very people the police are meant to safeguard,” Sarma said.

“It is time for the police to embrace reform, accountability, and compassion, or step aside to make way for a force that truly upholds these values, ” Sarma wrote on X.

The accused officer, Inspector Bhargav Borbora of Panbazar police station, has been suspended pending a departmental inquiry. Director General of Police G P Singh has directed the Guwahati Police Commissioner to appoint a replacement immediately.

The incident occurred on Friday night when the delivery boy, also a Cotton University student, inadvertently entered a no-entry zone at Fancy Bazar in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, Guwahati Police have increased patrolling in the city following intelligence reports of potential violence ahead of ULFA’s Protest Day on November 27.
