Imphal: The Kuki Youth Organisation (KYO) Women’s Council denounced the killing of a couple and the injury to their son in an attack in Manipur, noting that the assault took place on a date observed by the Kuki community as “Black Day” in memory of the 1990s Naga-Kuki conflict.
The council called for heightened security, better intelligence measures, and strict accountability to protect vulnerable civilians.
The Kaimai Village Authority stated that the attack appeared intended to stoke inter-community division and mistrust.
The authority appealed for calm, urged residents to ignore rumours, and demanded a swift, impartial investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
Two people were killed, and their minor son was injured when unidentified armed attackers opened fire on a family in Tollen village, under the Kaimai Police Station in Tamenglong district, early Sunday morning.
The attack occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on September 13. The victims have been identified as Lhingzangai and her husband, Seineh Singshit.
Lhingzangai died at the scene, while her husband succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in neighbouring Assam. Their son sustained a bullet injury to his left hand.
The motive behind the attack and the identities of the assailants remain unknown. No group has claimed responsibility.
Authorities have deployed additional security forces to the area as a precaution. Tamenglong district shares a border with Assam. Local bodies strongly condemned the violence.
