A youth from Amguri Khat in Jorhat district’s Titabar subdivision was arrested late on Friday night for shooting a person in the leg at Titabar Tiniali.

The incident of shooting took place near the railway gate under Titabar Police Station.

The arrested youth has been identified as Dhruba  Saikia.

The person, who was shot, has been undergoing treatment at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) and the bullet has been removed.

Titabar Sub-Divisional Police Officer S. Bora said it has not been established whether Dhruba Saikia had any previous quarrel with the person shot or whether it happened inadvertently.

“According to eyewitnesses’ accounts, Saikia is said to have come up from behind of his motorcycle and told a group of people, who were returning from a mela that he wanted to fire some shots,” said Bora.

“He cocked his pistol twice and let off a shot which hit the person standing near him,” police officer Bora said.

Bora further said Saikia was in a drunken state.

Investigating officer R. Kalita said Saikia had used a US-made .22 pistol, most likely bought fromNagaland, across the inter-district border.
