Dibrugarh: In a major crackdown on illegal arms trafficking, a joint team comprising Charaideo Police, Sivasagar Police and the Assam Rifles arrested two individuals and seized illegal firearms during a coordinated operation along the Assam-Nagaland border in Charaideo district.

The accused have been identified as Rajibul Islam and Moina Ali. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, security personnel launched a search operation in a border area of Charaideo district and intercepted the duo. During the operation, officials recovered two .22 calibre pistols from their possession.

According to authorities, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb the movement of illegal weapons and enhance security along the strategically sensitive Assam-Nagaland border.

The seized firearms have been taken into custody, and investigations are underway to trace their origin and ascertain whether the accused have links to any criminal syndicate or extremist outfit.

Charaideo Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surjit Singh Paneswar said, โ€œWe have arrested two individuals in connection with an arms supply case. They had brought the weapons and were attempting to hand them over to other individuals in Namtola. Further investigation is in progress.โ€

Police sources said the successful operation underscores the close coordination between district police units and central security forces in combating unlawful activities in border areas. The arrested individuals are currently being interrogated, and officials have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation progresses.

Security agencies have also intensified surveillance and intelligence-led operations across border districts to prevent the smuggling of arms, ammunition and other contraband items.
