Assam Rifles destroy insurgent bunkers and arrest five militants in major counter-insurgency operations in Manipur.

Imphal: Assam Rifles, in coordination with Manipur Police and other security agencies has stepped up intelligence-based operations across Manipur, recording significant gains in counter-insurgency and area domination efforts, according to a defence statement issued on Monday.

During the operations 16 bunkers were demolished in the hill districts of Ukhrul and Kamjong.

On Sunday, a self-styled Sergeant Major of the banned KCP (Apunba), who also functioned as a fighting commander was arrested in Thoubal district in a joint operation involving Kakching Commandos and Manipur Police.

Over the past week five militants linked to valley-based insurgent groups were apprehended along with a cache of weapons. The arrested individuals are associated with proscribed outfits KYKL, KCP (PSC), PREPAK (PRO), KYKL (SOREPA), and KCP (Apunba).

Recovered arms include a sub-machine gun carbine, four bolt-action rifles, a 9mm pistol, a single-barrel 12-bore gun, and ammunition of various calibres, along with a radio set. Security forces also seized mobile phones, SIM cards, Aadhaar cards, camouflage uniforms, and Rs6.81 lakh in cash.

All arrested individuals and seized materials have been handed over to the respective police stations for further legal action, the statement added.
