Manipur organised a workshop on AI in journalism, highlighting its benefits, challenges and role in media fact-checking.

Imphal: The Manipur government on June 24 organised a one-day workshop on the โ€œApplication of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Journalism and Media Fact-Checkingโ€ in Imphal, highlighting the growing role of AI in the media sector while underscoring the continued importance of human editorial oversight.

The workshop was organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) and brought together journalists, media professionals and government officials to discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence in modern journalism.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Information and Public Relations Secretary Hungyo Worshang said the rapid advancement of technology is unavoidable and media professionals must adapt to effectively harness AI-driven tools.

While acknowledging AIโ€™s capabilities in data analysis, content generation and information verification, he stressed that human judgment remains crucial in ensuring accuracy, credibility and ethical reporting.

Delivering the keynote address, IPR Director Dr. Th. Charanjeet Singh highlighted the increasing adoption of AI across multiple sectors. He noted that AI can support journalists in report writing, content curation and automating routine newsroom tasks, thereby enhancing productivity and operational efficiency.

The workshop featured a series of technical sessions led by experts from academia and the technology sector.

Dr. Haobam Joyremba Singh, CMD of Cube Ten Technologies Pvt. Ltd., spoke on โ€œAI Myths and Realities,โ€ addressing common misconceptions surrounding artificial intelligence and outlining its practical applications in contemporary media.

In another session, Dr. Hanjabam Saratchandra, Head of the Department of Computer Science at Manipur Technical University, discussed the role of AI in news gathering and fact-checking while highlighting the increasing threat posed by digital misinformation and manipulated content.

Dr. Angom Buboo Singh, Academic Head at NIELIT, demonstrated how AI-powered tools can improve newsroom productivity, streamline workflows and enhance the accuracy of news verification processes.

Participants from various media organisations and DIPR officials attended the programme, which focused on striking a balance between technological innovation and responsible journalism. The discussions emphasized that while AI offers transformative opportunities for the media industry, human oversight remains essential to maintaining editorial integrity and public trust.
