Guwahati: Assam Special Chief Secretary M.K. Yadava on Thursday inspected areas along the Doyang River in Uriamghat amid growing allegations of illegal stone mining near the Assam-Nagaland border.

Accompanied by senior officials from the district administration, Forest Department, CRPF, police and border authorities, Yadava carried out an on-ground inspection at multiple locations where stone extraction has reportedly been taking place.

Drone surveillance was also deployed during the visit to assess the extent of the alleged mining and identify any recent developments in the area.

Speaking to reporters, Yadava said the government would undertake a detailed review before taking any decision on the matter.

โ€œSeveral complaints had reached the Chief Minister. Therefore, along with officials from the district administration, forest department, police and border authorities, we jointly visited the site to examine the situation in detail,โ€ he said.

Yadava added that the matter would also be discussed with the Nagaland government as the affected region falls within the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) along the inter-state border.

โ€œIt would not be appropriate to make direct comments at this stage. We have also deployed drones for a detailed assessment,โ€ he added.

The inspection follows growing allegations of large-scale illegal stone mining in parts of the Uriamghat region under the Sarupathar subdivision.

Areas including Kherbari, Dalanipathar and Madhupur have reportedly witnessed extensive stone extraction allegedly carried out by organised mining groups.

Meanwhile, local MLA Biswajit Phukan has repeatedly raised concerns over the issue through social media posts and demanded action against those allegedly involved.

Following the complaints, the Assam government deputed a high-level team from Guwahati led by Yadava to conduct an on-ground review of the affected areas.
