North Lakhimpur: A storm lashed Assamโs Lakhimpur district on Saturday morning, leaving a trail of destruction across the area. The storm hit around 8 am, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain.
The intensity of the storm was so high that many rooftops were blown away, damaging several houses. In almost every part of the district, trees were uprooted and knocked to the ground. In several places, the fallen trees damaged houses and parked vehicles.
A major tragedy was averted when a passenger bus travelling from North Lakhimpur to Guwahati skidded off the road while trying to avoid a falling tree.
The incident occurred on NH-15 in Nowboicha, when the driver noticed the tree ahead and swerved, causing the bus to skid into a paddy field along the highway. No injuries were reported in the mishap.
In Belguri under Narayanpur, a huge tree fell on NH-15, disrupting traffic for several hours.
In the Badati-Jamuguri area under Bihpuria Revenue Circle, the impact of the storm was severe. It caused widespread damage to households and public infrastructure in several villages.
The storm also caused extensive damage to electricity infrastructure in the district, affecting power cables and poles in North Lakhimpur, Nowboicha, and Bihpuria electrical subdivisions. However, repair work was carried out by APDCL personnel, and power supply was restored in the district.
