North Lakhimpur: Severe weather conditions disrupted normal life across parts of Lakhimpur district from Wednesday afternoon, with heavy rainfall and strong winds causing widespread damage to property and infrastructure.
The worst-affected areas included Ghilamora and Dhakuakhana, where several villages reported extensive damage. Strong winds uprooted trees, many of which fell on houses, damaging roofs and other structures. Large-scale destruction of vegetation was reported across the district.
In the Dhalpur region under the Narayanpur Revenue Circle, the situation deteriorated as the Sesa river swelled following continuous rainfall. The rise in water levels, attributed to persistent rain in the region and adjoining hills of Arunachal Pradesh, led to the river breaching its banks late on Wednesday night. Floodwaters began entering nearby villages around 11 p.m., raising concerns among residents.
The overflowing river caused significant damage to the HawajanโSimaluguri PWD road, constructed under the Asom Mala project. The disruption of this key road link has affected rural connectivity, hindering the movement of people and essential services.
Authorities have begun assessing the extent of the damage, even as concerns persist over the possibility of further flooding if rainfall continues.
