Guwahati: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking in southern Assam, security forces seized a large consignment of suspected Yaba tablets worth nearly Rs 1 crore in Cachar district and arrested two alleged peddlers.
Acting on specific intelligence, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Jirighat Police conducted a search operation near the Manipur border at Jirighat. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Lakhipur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Prithwiraj Rajkhowa, with Jirighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rana Kumar Nath present at the site.
The team set up a naka checking point along National Highway 37, a key route connecting Silchar and Imphal that is frequently used for transporting goods between Assam and Manipur. During the checking, two individuals were stopped on suspicion and thoroughly searched.
Officials recovered approximately 10,000 Yaba tablets from their possession, weighing about 1.04 kilograms. According to police sources, the estimated black market value of the seized drugs is around Rs 1 crore.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment was being transported from Manipur and was likely intended for distribution across various parts of Cachar district.
The two accused have been taken into custody, and two mobile phones were also seized as part of the investigation. Police have launched further interrogation to trace the broader network behind the drug supply chain.
