Imphal: Security forces destroyed 23 bunkers illegally constructed in the hill ranges of Mongkot Chepu, Shongphel, Mullam, Sirarakhong, and Ringue villages under Litan Police Station in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Friday, officials reported on Saturday.

The bunkers were established by armed groups for territorial control amid escalating ethnic violence and renewed tensions in 2026. These fortified positions were erected to defend villages from perceived attacks by opposing communities.

From the sites, security personnel recovered one 12-bore pump-action gun, 17 live rounds of ammunition of different calibres, 111 fired cases, a battery charger, a magazine pouch, and a pair of jungle boots.

In a separate operation, security forces recovered two single-barrel rifles, four 9 mm pistols with magazines, 18 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which were destroyed in situ, and 15 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition from the T. Bongmol village area under Moreh Police Station in Tengnoupal district.

Security forces have intensified search operations and area domination in fringe and vulnerable areas across districts. The movement of 184 vehicles carrying essential items along NH-37 has been secured.

Strict security measures have been put in place at all vulnerable locations, and security convoys are being deployed on sensitive stretches to ensure free and safe transit.

A total of 114 checkpoints (nakas) have been installed across Manipurโ€™s hills and valleys, according to reports from the Manipur Police.
