All classes of the primary level in schools will remain closed in all districts having more than 100 active Covid-19 cases in Assam.

The Assam government has also passed an order to impose Rs 1000 fine on any person found without face masks across the district.

This was announced by Assam education and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday during a press conference at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati.

โ€œIn view of the rapid surge in Covid-19 cases and the threat that it poses to the well-being of small children, classes of all primary level will remain closed in all districts with more than 100 active cases,โ€ said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

โ€œClasses in other districts, which have less than 100 cases will continue following all Covid-19 protocols for now,โ€ said the health minister.

A number of students in several schools and colleges across Assam have tested positive after classes resumed from January 1 this year.

Educational institutions in Assam remained closed for more than seven months last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

At least 20 school students in the Kamrup (Metro) district have tested positive for the virus in the two months, forcing the school administrations to opt for online classes.

A total of 573 tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours Assam, with 245 testing positive in Kamrup (Metro) district alone.

The disease has claimed the lives of four more people, taking Assamโ€™s total death toll to 1,127.

A total of 2,22,940 positive cases have been detected in the state, of which 4,089 are active cases.
