Guwahati: One set of nomination papers filed by Congress candidate Bidisha Neog from the key Jalukbari Assembly constituency, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is contesting, was rejected during scrutiny on Tuesday, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Official data indicated that Neogโ€™s nomination was among three Congress entries that faced rejection during the scrutiny process. The other two candidates were Ananda Narah from Dhakuakhana and Nirmal Langthasa from Haflong.

The ECI website stated that one set each of nomination papers filed by Bidisha Neog and Ananda Narah was cancelled. However, another set of nomination papers submitted by both candidates has been accepted, allowing them to remain in the fray.

Overall, 18 nomination papers have been rejected so far as scrutiny continues. Officials said the reasons for the rejections have not yet been disclosed.

In contrast, the nomination of Nandita Garlosa from Haflong, who recently joined the Congress, has been accepted.

In total, 1,389 nomination papers have been filed by more than 815 candidates for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.

Polling is scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes set for May 4. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 26.
