While Assam Police has ranked 3rd and Sikkim Police ranked 5th in the country’s overall rating in the index for public perceptions and citizen satisfaction in a survey for 2021 conducted by the Indian Police Foundation (IPF).

The IPF used 6 competency-based dimensions and 3 values-based dimensions of trust during the survey.

The Smart Policing Index 2021 placed Andhra Pradesh (8.11) on top, Telangana (8.10) in the 2nd position and Kerala (7.53) in the 4th position.

Bihar has ranked worst overall policing, followed by Uttar Pradesh.

“We believe that these annual surveys would be an ideal strategy to nudge state police organisations to strive for better public perception and trust levels, year on year, by continuously improving their professional competencies and ethical values and thereby, the quality of their service to the people,” the survey report said.

The SMART scores are set on a scale of 1-10 and are indicative of the levels of citizen satisfaction, a score of 10 being the highest level of satisfaction.

With an index value of 7 or above, a total of 19 states and UTs scored an index value between 6 and 7, while 3 states scored between 5 and 6.

“Despite being attacked for insufficient sensitivity, declining public confidence and growing concerns about the quality of policing, a majority of citizens (a weighted average of 66.93%) believe that the police are doing their job well and strongly support the police,” the survey report states.

In the individual indicators for 6 competency-based dimension, Assam Police has been ranked in the 3rd position in “perception index of police sensitivity”, “perception index of strict and good behaviour”, “perception index of accessibility”, “perception index of police responsiveness” and “perception index of helpful and friendly policing”.

In the “perception index of technology adoption,” Assam has ranked 8.

The Director General of Police (DGP), Assam, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has expressed thanks to the people of the state for their support.

He said the achievement has been possible only of the people’s trust in the police force.

Mahanta also thanked Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his bold leadership.
