The accused officer, Inspector Bhargav Borbora, who serves as the Officer-in-Charge of Panbazar Police Station, has been suspended with immediate effect pending a departmental inquiry.

The decision was announced by Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh, who condemned the officer’s behavior as “unacceptable.”

The incident occurred on Friday evening near the Jail Road traffic point in Fancy Bazar in Guwahati.

Eyewitness accounts and the viral video reveal a harrowing sequence of events. The delivery man, who has not been officially identified, allegedly violated a traffic rule by crossing a signal. A police officer, believed to be Inspector Borbora, pursued the man, forcibly pulled him to the side of the road, and subjected him to a brutal assault.

The video footage, captured by a concerned passerby, shows the officer repeatedly striking the delivery man, even as bystanders pleaded with him to stop.

The officer is seen grabbing the victim’s neck, threatening his life, and using abusive language. Despite attempts by several individuals to intervene, the officer continued his assault, even threatening those who tried to help.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with netizens demanding stringent action against the errant officer. Many have questioned the conduct of the police and raised concerns about the increasing instances of police brutality.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter. The suspended officer has been closed to Ordinary Reserve pending the outcome of the inquiry, Barah said.
