The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Monday stated that if the Panchayat election is conducted amid the ‘claim and objection’ process of the National Register of Citizenship (NRC), which would start after publication of final draft NRC on July 30, is likely to create problem.

Addressing media persons here at the party head office in Guwahati, AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam said, “It would be a part of conspiracy of the Government to interfere the NRC update process if the Government and the Election Commission conduct the Panchayat election amid the ‘claim and objection’ process of the NRC in the State.”

It may be mentioned that a bench of the Gauhati High Court headed by AK Goswami issued an order where it asked the Assam Government and the State Election Commission to conduct the Panchayat elections within September 15, 2018.

Islam said, “If the Panchayat election, which is a constitutional obligation, is conducted amid the ‘claim and objection’ process of the NRC, which is a national commitment and the only hope to save the indigenous people of the State, a problem will arise if both the exercise takes place in the same time.”

Talking about the security, Aminul Islam asked, “What will the police and paramilitary force personnel do? How will they ensure security across the State to prevent possible attempts by miscreants to create unrest after the publication of the final draft NRC on July 30 if they get engaged for security in Panchayat election?”

Islam, while claiming that the minority people of the State are co-operating the authorities concerned in the NRC update work, said, “The minority people of the State are maintaining silence. But that does not mean, they are in fear of missing their names in the final draft NRC.”

AIUDF’s Gouripur MLA Nizanur Rahman was also present in the press conference.
