Police on Friday arrested a person, identified as Muthu Saikia, on charges of assaulting Mausumi Saikia, an engineer of Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), Baligaon sub-division in Jorhat on Thursday evening.

The arrested person is a resident of Chengeliati Koch Gaon under Pulibor police station in Jorhat.

A case (No 710 /2020) was registered at Pulibor police station on Friday and Muthu Saikia was booked under sections 307, 326, 352 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

This is the second case of assault on a woman in Jorhat in less than 10 days.

Saikia was on a drive to disconnect power from households which had defaulted in bill payments.

During her drive, she spotted a household which was illegally drawing power from an electric cable.

The engineer said as soon as she instructed lineman Prasanta Bharali to disconnect the illegally drawn wire, she and Bharali were heckled and assaulted by Mithu Saikia, son of the house owner Gobinda Saikia.

She further said Mithu’s wife also came out with a knife (dao) to assist her husband.

The engineer and Bharali received injuries in the ensuing scuffle and they were forced to turn back.

She later filed an FIR at Pulibor police station against Mithu Saikia.

Mausumi and Bharali also had to get themselves treated for injuries at a hospital.

On November 11 evening, Indu Moni Gogoi, an assistant sub-inspector, was assaulted along with her husband at Jail Road area by a person, identified as Ankur Pathak of Dissoi.
