Assam Power Distribution Company Limited engineer of Baligaon subdivision, Mausumi Saikia has been assaulted and injured by a villager at Chengeliati in Assam’s Jorhat district.

This is the second instance of crime against women to take place within a few days in the district.

A case of assault has been registered in the Pulibor Police Station.

According to sources, the victim was conducting a drive to disconnect power from households which had defaulted in bill payments in Chengeliati on Thursday evening.

She spotted a house, which was illegally drawing power from an electric cable.

As soon as she instructed the linesman, Prasanta Bharali to disconnect the illegally drawn wire, both were heckled and assaulted by Mithu Saikia, son of the house owner Gobind Saikia.

Mausumi said that the accused’s wife had also come out with a knife (dao) to assist her husband.

She and Bharali sustained injuries in the ensuing scuffle and were forced to turn back.

They got themselves treated at a nearby hospital.

Pulibor police Station’s officer-in- charge, Rubul Ali said that they were searching for Mithu, who is currently absconding.

In a similar incident, a female police ASI had been assaulted along with her husband in Jail Road area in Jorhat town on November 11.
